Netlive -

Netlive is a slightly unusual distribution developed in Italy: a live version of Linux that makes available on demand any other live version of Linux chosen by its administrators to all the computers of its local network. Its developers, Ezio Da Rin and Marco Clocchiatti, call Netlive "a very efficient way to build portable ICT labs for schools, alternative to the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP)".
The practical advantages of Netlive for end users, that is schools and students, have been already explained elsewhere. This page, instead, explains Netlive's internal architecture and what makes it different from LTSP.

Privatix 10.02.07

"Free portable encrypted system on an usb flash drive or an external hard drive for safe editing and carrying along of sensitive data, for encrypted communication and anonymous web surfing

Not everyone who finds privacy important while using the internet and communicating or is editing sensitive data always has their own computer with a safely set up operating system and the required tools at their disposal or want to carry it with them.

That's why we created the Privatix Live-System (based on Debian GNU/Linux). It is an easy to operate safe and portable system that can be booted from a cd-rom, an usb flash drive or an external hard drive and ensures your privacy and confidentiality while using the internet and communicating or editing and encrypting sensitive data.

Therefore standard applications such as browser, email client, word processor, image viewer and most importantly numerous data protection and encryption software are integrated.

Private data and settings, documents, e-mails, or pgp-keys are not saved on the computer that you use but instead those are saved on the encrypted usb flash drive or on the encrypted external hard drive. In case of loss or theft of the data medium your personal data is going to stay protected by a password.

No free storage space is required, no system needs to be installed or any specific operating system or other programms are necessary on the computer that is used because the whole system and all other applications are loaded from the usb flash drive or from the external hard drive.

This way you can use unknown computers without having to rely on the security of the installed operating system that might be infected with trojans or software keyloggers and without requiring tools to be installed and despite of this mobility preserve high data protection standards or you can create a separate secure environment for very sensitive data or communication (e.g. collective bargaining, online banking, whistleblowing and e-mail encryption) on any external medium in addition to your regular operating system installation."

WeakNet Linux Version IV, WEAKERTHAN kernel version 1.0

WeakNet Labs has just released the latest version of its highly customized WeakNet Linux, a penetration testing Linux distribution packed with goodies for security experts and sysadmins, but not only. WeakNet Linux IV brings the first release of the custom WeakerThan Linux kernel with built-in support for packet injection and a faster boot time. It also comes with a lot of tools for testing a network’s strength to attacks and other types of security-related testing.

WeakNet Linux IV packs in a lot of punch. The OS boots lightning-fast, thanks to a great deal of optimizations on this part. It’s very lightweight, it uses Fluxbox as a window manager and most utilities have been chosen with speed in mind. Google Chrome is now the default web browser, its speed and relatively small memory footprint made it a perfect candidate for WeakNet. WeakNet Linux IV also gets a visual revamp with a new Fluxbox theme and boot splash.

WeakNet Linux IV Applications (including full list) and Themes and more)

Highlights of WeakNet Linux IV:

· WeakerThan Linux kernel 1.0;
· Wireless penetration testing tools: FreeRADIUS WPE edition, AIRPWN, a customized Kismet, and a lot more;
· Better wireless support, with Ath9k, Ath5k, Rt73USB and Broadcom drivers modified for packet injection;
· Boots directly into X, skips any graphical login manager;
· More ‘user-friendly’ pen testing tools;
· FTP and networking clients like VNC and Filezilla;
· Better MITM (Man-in-the-middle) support and new apps;
· Google Chrome replaces Mozilla Firefox;
· RAV hunter - a new tool that seeks and destroys rogue antivirus clients on infected Windows machines;
· SAM Hunter - a utility to reset passwords on Windows 7,Vista, XP and NT machines;
· Technician utilities - a bunch of utilities for Windows and Mac admin and security-related jobs.

NimbleX 2010 Beta released

After a long wait a new NimbleX version is finally out. Many things have changed hopefully for the better in the long run. First of all, after about 5 years, the ideea of keeping it limited to less than 200MB was dropped. There is a lot more in the distro right now so in the end it should make the user experience better.

Even though almost everything is new, we can still say the major changes include Kernel 2.6.33 with the latest squashfs and aufs2, XServer 1.7.5, KDE4, the replacement of KOffice with OpenOffice and many more.

Read more on the official website of NimbleX.

XtreemOS 2.0 release: A Linux-base Grid OS

Rennes, France November 12, 2009 - The XtreemOS project has released the second public release of its Linux-based Grid operating system under the motto "Making Grid Computing Easier". The consortium has conceived and integrated a platform of open source technologies to enable easier usage, management, scalabilty and programming on top of Grid computing resources.

XtreemOS brings new capabilties to Grids, such as easing job submission and monitoring, while providing a comprehensive security implementation and virtual organization management. XtreemOS comes in three flavors: The PC flavor makes it possible to aggregate standalone PCs as computation resources into XtreemOS Grids. The XtreemOS cluster flavor is based on Kerrighed's LinuxSSI (single system image) technology. LinuxSSI is a Linux cluster providing users an image of a single large system. The third flavor, XtreemOS Mobile has been tailored to run XtreemOS services on mobile devices, such as Nokia Internet Tablets.

The 2.0 release version includes the following functionalities:

* Creation and management of dynamic virtual organizations The security infrastructure includes a set of services that guarantee the secure operation of the system, providing management of credentials, permissions and resources.

* Application execution management AEM is able to search available nodes that fulfill the application needs from within a large number of candidates and then execute the application on the selected nodes. AEM provides job and resource monitoring so that users can get a Linux-like view of their applications. A new experimental feature in this release is the ability to run interactive jobs such as graphical applications unmodifed; harnessing the power of a Grid system. In addition, there is a new graphical tool for editing and managing job submissions. Lasty, grid checkpointing and job migration has been integrated into this version.

* XtreemFS is a replicated and distributed object-based file system. It allows scaling an installation by adding machines with free storage resources. It offers striping of files over multiple storage servers for high performance parallel access. Furthermore, it supports automated mounting of home volumes.

* XOSAGA programming interface The XOSAGA API is built using the Simple API for Grid Applications (SAGA) standard from the Open Grid Forum (OGF). It provides access to XtreemOS resources and services.

* Xosautoconfig is a new tool included in the distribution, which assists Grid administrators and other users to quickly deploy XtreemOS nodes on Virtual Machines, Grids and test beds.

With this release, the XtreemOS consortium invites the participation of external contributors and feedback. XtreemOS is open source and GPL/BSD licensed. For more info please email: There is a lively developer channel on #xtreemos-dev on, as well.

Getting XtreemOS
The second public version based on Mandriva Linux isos can be downloaded from the project website: The source code is available at Also available in the distribution are sample applications and demos.

About XtreemOS
Partially funded by the sixth framework programme (Contract FP6-033576) of the European Commission, XtreemOS is a 4-year research project, comprised of 19 academic and enterprise partners in Europe and China that aims to develop a Linux based grid operating system to simplify the usage, management and programming of grids.

XtreemOS is a 4-year integrated project aiming at building and promoting a Grid operating system based on Linux to underpin future computing grids. The XtreemOS operating system provides for Grids what a traditional operating system offers for a single computer: abstraction from the hardware and secure resource sharing between different users. The project is led by INRIA and involves 19 research and industrial partners from Europe and China. More information on our project website:

In WeakNet Linux 3 We are Debuting our very own implementation of a Social Network. This Social Network acts much like any other which is built from MySQL / PHP / and HTML. This server can be used for a fun thing to do with friends, or as a hacking point in a Computer Security Lab. One can learn a lot about how PHP, HTML, and Apache2 work plus get some good SQL injection experience.

The default window manager is now FluxBox to save space. They have added the following drivers for Wireless: madwifi-ng (patched for injection) latest build, BCM43x ALL, rt2x00 patched, rt73 (serialmonkey patched for injection), rt73usb, Ath5k, Ath9k, wlan-ng (patched for injection), and more. This version uses the acclaimed WICd network manager.

WardriveSQL now has a GUI startup program to start it up, which allows you to specify remote or localhost MySQL server for remote viewers to watch you wardrive in real time. WiFiZoo has 2 new GUI implementations to get you started sniffing cookies in the lab!

WiFiS33k - Perl implementation of a WiFi Sniffer that can be ran as you are associated to an AP:

Added a much larger SQL injection menu in the desktop menu, and more applications including AirPWN (tested with LORCON and working), and much more.

Web Hacking Portal - same version, updated phishers. Added more security links to Firfox and links to reference sites to learn computer security.

New Forums have also been implemented for FREE HELP with the OS on WeakNet Labs' website HERE: WeakNet Labs' Forums 660MB

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 5

"Hello Ubuntu developers,

Welcome to Karmic Koala Alpha 5, which will in time become Ubuntu 9.10.

Pre-releases of Karmic are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 5 is the fifth in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Karmic development cycle. The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Karmic. You can download it here: (Ubuntu) (Ubuntu Server for UEC and EC2) (Ubuntu ARM) (Kubuntu) (Xubuntu) (Mythbuntu)

See for a list of mirrors.

Alpha 5 includes a number of software updates that are ready for large-scale testing. This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a list of known bugs (that you don't need to report if you encounter), please see:

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop Karmic, have a look at the karmic-changes mailing list:

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other interesting events.

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

Steve Langasek
On behalf of the Ubuntu release team"
